The Geckos proved to be way to strong for the
Bintangs, dominating all day all over the field. Although
at one stage the Geckos somehow managed to have one too many
players on the ground, which resulted in receiving a 2 goal
penalty. It really didn’t make much difference as the
Geckos continued to put the ball through the big bamboo sticks.
In his debut for the Geckos, rover Matty Scarf
benefited from the dominating Geckos ruckmen - son of former
footy great Graham “Polly” Farmer Dean who changed
with ex-WAFL ruckman Tony Watson off the bench. Matty, who
was awarded BOG, made the most of being fed the ball all day
long as did the other Geckos on-ballers. Meanwhile Zaddo made
a striking fashion statement, using a sock as a headband along
with his ankle high white Reebok aerobic boots.
The Paddywack
During the third quarter, Gecko number 4 and mad Richmond
supporter Paddy Hurley did not at all like the close attention
given by his Bintang opponent. Reverting back to the tactics
he learnt in the North-West Melbourne suburban footy, the
‘Paddywack’ reared its ugly head. Needless to
say, the said Bintang opponent did got give him anymore close
attention.
The Geckos came out easy winners, thrashing
the Bintangs by 121 points. It was then time to sing the club
song, which had only been created two days before, for the
first time in history.
At the post-match function held later at the
Adrenalin Park, Matty was missing when he was presented the
award apparently busy with paperwork. The traditional skull
for winning the BOG was taken by his girlfriend Aarna on his
behalf. John Lincoln then made a few visits into the bush,
with the branches not quite strong enough to hold him up,
then caused a commotion when he later fell down the stairs
at Paddy’s.
