Jakarta Bintangs 7 16 58

The Bali Geckos proved too strong for their arch rivals the Jakarta Bintangs in Kuta last Saturday, winning by a convincing seven goals and holding onto the Java-Bali Cup in the process. The Geckos dominated from the first bounce, continuously winning the ball out of the centre and turning defense into attack. If it was not for inaccurate kicking, the game may have been over by quarter time. A highlight of the quarter was a strong mark and subsequent goal from part-time ruckman Russell McGrath in the goal square, while Shane Pritchard was elusive in the forward line.
The Bintangs starting working better as a team during the second term, but were off line, amassing 1.7 for the quarter. Geckos’ captain Sammy Gosling continued to work well out of the centre, while Stewart Henderson, playing out from his usual full forward position, used the ball creatively in the ruck.
Despite a strong lead at half time, Geckos’ coach Peter Muir was not happy with his team’s performance, citing a lack of numbers at contests and misuse of the ball into the forward line. His half-time talk to the players did not work, as the Bintnags had the best of the following third quarter. Despite good efforts from Greg Hinchliffe, Dave Schonell and Peter Muir in the backline, the Bintangs won the ball easily out of the centre and kicked four goals for the quarter. The Geckos regrouped, and with a more conscious effort in the midfield, run over the top of their rivals in the last quarter.

The Geckos now have held the Java-Bali Cup for the past three years. They are now preparing for their annual international tournament, the Bank Commonwealth Bali Nines, which will be held on October 13.
